Photos: Kenya Airways Aircraft Severely Damaged in Airport Collision

Two aircraft, on Saturday were involved in as damaging collision at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

Both aircraft, numbers 5Y-KYR and 5Y-FFF belong to Kenya Airways (KQ).
These were reportedly involved in a collision just in front of the airline’s hangar at Kenya’s biggest airport.

Local media report that the two planes were scheduled for engine maintenance at the time of the accident.

The test usually involves throttling the engine to the take-off level while brakes and chokes are on.

According to the reports, the tests usually happen outside in front of a hunger, since the airline has not invested in an engine run bay at the maintenance bay.
The plane which was undergoing engine run then, 5Y-KYR, lost the brakes and rammed on to 5Y-FFF, greatly damaging it,” Kenyan media reported.

“The technician who was inside the aircraft cabin during the incidence steered the plane to avoid hitting the hangar and thought of sacrificing the 5Y-FFF plane.
The incident is expected to affect the routes plied by the aircraft.
