Mbarara: Besigye Case Pushed to 2019

Mbarara Grade One Magistrate Sanyu Mukasa on Friday adjourned to February next year, a case in which FDC’s Col Dr Kizza Besigye and other opposition leaders are accused of unlawful assembly, inciting violence and damaging a police vehicle.

Other suspects in the case include among others FDC President Patrick Amuriat, Ingrid Turinawe, Mubarak Munyagwa and Besigye’s driver Fred Kato.

According to prosecution, Besigye and his colleagues damaged police vehicles and assaulted 4 police officers on duty on 14 November, 2017 at Mahembe Gente as they were proceeding for a rally in Mbarara.

Appearing before the court today, ASP Collins Kaganzi attached to FFU Mbarara pinned Kawempe MP Mubarak Munyagwa for leading the people who vandalized police cars which included two Hilux cars, a Toyota land cruiser, a water cannon, and assaulting 4 police officers on duty.

During cross examination by lawyer Elias Lukwago however, Kaganzi couldn’t confirm whether or not he saw Munyagwa throwing stones at police.

State attorney Caroline Keshubi asked court to adjourn the matter to summon other police witnesses in the matter.

But Lukwago opposed the adjournment saying it costly for his clients having to travel to Kampala to Mbarara.

“You know we have travelled a long distance and state is not producing the witnesses in court; remember this is a case of 2017. I pray for its dismissal and discharge the accused persons” said Lukwago

Magistrate Mukasa nonetheless adjourned the matter to 22 February, 2019.

Speaking to reporters thereafter, Col Besigye said such are meant to detract the opposition from keeping pressure on the regime.

“These are just trumped up charges intended to inconvenience us and stopping us from doing other useful work; to finish our financial resources and to destruct us from liberating our country,” said Dr. Besigye.
