Kirehe District Police Commander Superintendent of Police (SP) James Rutaremara has told residents of the district that, neighborhood watch and night patrols (Irondo) are some of the most efficient measures against crimes that are mostly committed at night.

SP Rutaremara made the call in a recent meeting with over 3000 residents of Nyamugari Sector where he also reminded them of their role in contributing to safety through community policing The DPC went on to highlight common crimes in the District; among them include cattle theft and drug trafficking and abuse. “Cattle theft is commonly done at night same as drug traffickers usually move in the wee hours of the night; to overcome these crimes, you need to intensify neighborhood watch and night patrols so that we collectively bring offenders to justice. This district is sometimes used as a transit route for drug traffickers; we have to bring that to an end,” he said.

SP Rutaremara drew a close link between drug abuse and crimes like Gender Based Violence, assault and theft saying that, “records indicate that most of these crimes are committed by people who are under the influence of drugs. This means if we address the problem of drugs we will be solving many other related issues.” “Every citizen should understand the consequences related to drug abuse and be more determined to fight them… Do not connive or shield those who break the law...always endeavour to work with Police and local authorities to identify drug traffickers,” said SP Rutaremara.

The Executive Secretary of Nyamugari Sector, Ananias Gatsinzi told residents to work closely with security organs saying the security is the pillar to development and their welfare. “The best way you can contribute to building a safer community is through working closely with the police and other security organs, and provide every information about anything suspicious,” said Gatsinzi.
